Critical Reflection

As a whole, I am satisfied with how far I have come during the past 12 weeks of development for this capstone project, CLOWWD. There were many ups and downs with factors concerning the time and balancing out the different aspects of the trimester. From this there have been great personal development and self discovery to not only my fashion practice but also the individual that I am. I have recognised my strengths and weaknesses which I have taken into consideration during this project as well as for future projects. Overall, the journey into producing and finalising a capstone project that has its roots stemmed from the current industry concerns of sustainable and ethical practices, has taught me many valuable lessons that I am able to apply to future ventures down the line.

During the course of developing ideas, toiling them and producing final prototypes, I believe that I have reflected my vision of having a perfectly imperfect outcome reflecting individuality and responsible supply-chain management. The business model that is built upon zero-waste has successfully fulfilled the aim to address the waste in the industry, especially on one-off garments to mitigate overproduction and overconsumption as well as reflecting on the values incorporated to the products in relation to the environment, people and connection. I have been able to source my materials from yarn that has 100% natural fibres from a company that is responsible for sourcing their raw materials and production of their yarn, following environmental, ethical and technical standards. This embeds sustainable and ethical values into each garment for only a more responsible fashion practice but so that consumers are able to feel good in the garments that they receive from CLOWWD. My designs have also been developed to reflect the natural lines and forms of nature, tapping into the idea of transient elements as well as the value of connection. The fragility of the materials and the ethereal nature of the designs support my idea of having a built-in-expiry date which lead to the circular aspect of the project where the pre-loved garments are able to be returned to be repurposed and have a new life, similar to how a death of a phoenix is followed by the rebirth of another from its ashes.

Having accomplished many things during this capstone project, there are many opportunities for improvement for a more refined and considered outcome. One of the main aspects that can have more effort put into is the management of time to have an increased efficient and effective work flow throughout the weeks, making most of each day and night to develop, iterate and reflect in order to produce the best outcome possible. There should be more planning to keep on track with the daily tasks that need to be completed and more importantly is consistently checking in with the planner as well as lecturers to have guidance provided for better understanding and outcome of work.
